What is My PlayBreak?

My PlayBreak is a self-exclusion tool that allows Ontarian players to take a break from gambling more easily. It’s an important part of OLG’s ongoing effort to prevent problem gambling. Users can block themselves from playing at any OLG Internet Gaming sites by registering via the self-exclusion program.

Furthermore, if you choose to exclude yourself using the My PlayBreak registry, you will also be excluded from receiving any promotional material or marketing communications during the break period.

How does My PlayBreak work?

OLG PlaySmart and PlayBreak make it easy for anyone ready to take a step back and stop gambling for a while. You can get started by creating an OLG account. Request to be a part of the self-exclusion program by contacting support staff. This prompts a registration process, where you can choose which type of break you want and for how long you want to exclude yourself.

If you’re taking a break from online gambling, you’ll be able to select the duration of your exclusion. These are your options:

  • 1 day
  • 1 week
  • 1-6 months
  • 1-5 years

You’ll not be able to access any Ontarian online casinos during the selected period. Once done, you’ll be able to review the terms and conditions, and receive a link to treatment services.

About OLG PlaySmart

PlaySmart acts as a gambling encyclopedia and is a part of OLG’s responsible gambling program. It’s a way for players to engage and educate themselves about gambling in general to make smarter decisions.

Use PlaySmart to access information about everything there is to know about gambling in Canada, covering every imaginable category.

Benefits of non-PlayBreak casinos

There’s a slew of advantages to choosing an online casino not connected to My PlayBreak. This is especially true for those who have accidentally signed up for the self-exclusion program, or for those who chose a longer duration than they would’ve wanted. Here are some of the upsides of playing at a non-PlayBreak casino:

  • Fewer restrictions
  • Play whenever you want
  • Less complicated KYC, no verification
  • Access to rare slots and games

Drawbacks of casinos without PlayBreak

Playing at casinos without My PlayBreak isn’t completely void of disadvantages, however. Those who really need to take a break from gambling, should. We won't encourage you to play if you had good reason to exclude yourself from Ontario gambling sites using the PlayBreak program. These are some of the downsides to playing at casino sites with no connection to My PlayBreak:

  • Regulated outside of Ontario
  • Fewer responsible gambling tools
  • No casino apps available in Canada
  • Inconvenient customer service hours

Deposit and withdrawal methods

While playing at a non-PlayBreak casino online, you’ll have fewer transaction options. That said, there are still a few payment providers that work great for both deposits and withdrawals, even when the casino is based outside of Ontario or Canada.

Currently, these are the most prominent and popular payment methods at casinos without PlayBreak blocker:

  1. Credit cards/debit cards
  2. E-wallets
  3. Cryptocurrency

Licences of Canadian casinos with no PlayBreak

You won’t see any Canadian or Ontarian licences at these casino sites. Instead, there are other popular gambling regulators to provide online casinos with a gambling licence. These are located in Europe and other areas of the world. Let’s take a closer look at some of the various licences you may encounter.

Malta Gaming Authority (MGA)

One of the most known and renowned gambling licences in the casino industry. This EU licence regulates a big part of the European online casino market. The regulations put on casino sites are strict but fair and promote responsible gambling.

Curaçao Egaming (CEG)

Another popular and common gambling regulator. While some may view their regulations as laxer compared to MGA, they’re doing a good job of creating a safe and secure environment for casino players all around the world.

Gibraltar Regulatory Authority (GRA)

While not as common with European casinos, this licence from Gibraltar is as good as any gambling licence. They’re serious, safe and working towards a better industry.

Responsible gambling and resources

It’s easy to forget, but we shouldn’t take problem gambling lightly. Playing at online casinos may make it harder to properly self-regulate and control your gambling behaviour. Sometimes it’s enough just to take a step back and consider how much time or money you’ve spent gambling the past week.

If you’ve chosen to take a break from gambling by self-excluding via the My PlayBreak program, we strongly suggest that you don’t visit any casinos still available to you. Some players have just accidentally signed up for the registry or selected a longer timeout period than actually needed.

We take responsible gambling seriously, and so should you. Read more about it in our responsible gambling guide, or check the resources below to find help right away.
